Knee Pain

It's not all about the cartilage

Knee pain is an extremely common symptom seen at our office. Over the years Dr. Flanagan has found that too much focus is placed on the knee joint, and the cartilage within the joint, leading to less than optimal outcomes.

MRI's are heavily relied on to diagnose and treat knee pain, even though studies show extensive degenerative changes in patients who have no pain!

While the number of surgeries continues to rise, newer injection based treatments with biologics like PRP, bone marrow cells, and adipose cells are gaining popularity. There are certainly instances where surgery is required, but you can be assured Dr. Flanagan will help manage your pain comprehensively with a goal of joint preservation, if possible. After exhausting non-surgical options patients can easily be referred to a surgical specialist for repair or replacement of an injured knee.

Although the knee seems like a simple joint that flexes and extends through its range of motion, it can be quite complex considering the impact the foot, ankle, hip, spine and rotational mechanics of the leg all have on the function of the knee joint. Treating chronic knee pain may involve treating these other areas as well as the soft tissue around the knee joint, and Dr. Flanagan can help manage your pain comprehensively, evaluating your body mechanics as a whole.
